AVALON ORGANIC GARDENS & ECOVILLAGE
Avalon Organic Gardens & Ecovillage is one of North America's largest EcoVillages, situated on 220-acres of historic agricultural land in Southern Arizona's fertile Santa Cruz River Valley. At Avalon Gardens, over 120 dedicated individuals practice farming using traditional permaculture principles and time-honored techniques of organic gardening, as well as new sustainable technologies. We promote seed saving and the cultivation of heritage and heirloom varieties of produce which we provide to our local area through our Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. Our community is actively living in harmony with the earth through sustainability and cooperation. We bid you come; the harvest is ready. http://avalongardens.org
NATIVE SEED SEARCH
Crop diversity is key to achieving sustainable food security both globally and within our own region of focus, the southwestern U.S. and northwestern Mexico. Our approach to food security focuses on seed security, which relies on the conservation and sharing of appropriate crop diversity and the knowledge to use that diversity effectively. Our programs are designed to address these goals and broadly entail:
- Seed banking to ensure the survival of unique agricultural biodiversity and to document its traits.
- Seed distribution so that these crops continue to contribute to the region's food systems.
- Support for on-farm maintenance of dynamically-evolving crop varieties.
- Research into low-input and climate-appropriate agricultural practices.
- Education in managing local crop diversity and contributing to regional efforts.
DEEP DIRT
Borderlands partners with Deep Dirt Farm Institute (DDFI) on watershed restoration, hands-on workshops, and science projects. The Institute is located at Deep Dirt Farm, which comprises 34 acres with deep agricultural soils, bisected by an ephemeral stream/wildlife corridor. The farm lies within a folded topography of hills, small sheltered valleys & a broad meadow of the Sky Island region.

Deep Dirt Farm Institute (DDFI) makes a significant contribution as a learning center that cultivates understanding about, and knowledge of, local food production.
Kate Tirion, Founder and Director of the Deep Dirt Farm Institute was raised on an Amish-style farming (pre-industrial) world in West Wales. Her father taught agriculture practicum, her mother was a naturalist with a passion for fungi. Every day was an opportunity to learn. In 1994, Kate realized that her family farm environment was a permacultural one when she listened to Joel Salatin describe his farm, in the Shenandoah Valley.
